This is a documentary that sheds light into the tactics of modern media in setting global standards. The media has been working endlessly at aiming to standardize Caucasians as the "social norm" by propagating recurring images depicting Caucasians in positive roles and as protagonists while usually depicting Non-Caucasians as background characters and antagonists. This causes societies to build perceptive stereotypes and ultimately causing classification and prejudice.
I applied the insight I gained from this documentary to media today:
The 'Precious' movie that recently came out strongly reinforces the African American stereotype. It is a movie that follows the life of a young African American female who experiences obesity, illiteracy, abuse, incest and violence. All of which help construct the current stereotype of African Americans as being lazy, immoral degenerates who live in poverty. It is no surprise that 'White' critics viewed this movie as sensible and worth the watch. The African American populous however, sees this movie as demoralizing and have a hard time connecting with it.
Below is the first section of the documentary.

1st Welcome back to blogging!
2nd thank you for sharing this documentary, I have not heard of it before.
What you bring is very true, it shocks me and makes me sad when people brush this issue off as if it's nothing. All my sisters think I over analysize thing. When in fact we all are becoming desensitive to these racist protrayls and sterotypes! How many times do we laugh along or accept the 'norm'? Plenty!
I was almost going to go see the movie when I heard it was playing in our city. But, decided not to go when my freind told me it was degrading and sterotypical crap. Alamdilillah I didn't waste my money :D
I'm a sucker Ayan :( I actually watched it and I wish I hadnt. It was so disturbing! I only feel like its receiving a lot of buzz in the press simply because of how precisely it connects with the stereotype constructed for African Americans. It's kinda sad. modern racism at its finest.
